The Role
Better Mining aims to encourage supply chains that comply with legal and regulatory requirements to certify minerals as conflict-free. Its implementation is intended to stimulate sustainable trade in artisanally produced minerals, as well as improving the conditions of their production in order to contribute significantly to local development.
As a Field Agent, you will help collect high quality data from the mine sites. The data will include reports on incidents and events at mine sites and local mining communities, as well as socio-economic and socio-demographic data. The data is then used by the Better Mining team to propose solutions that support the livelihoods and well-being of people working in or affected by supply chains. You will also be responsible for delivering these recommendations to mining communities and monitoring their progress.
Location
The Field Agent will be based in Rwanda and will conclude the majority of work from this location. The Field Agent should expect to reside at Project’s Mine site(s) and spend most of their work time there.
Reporting lines
The Field agent/Monitor will report directly to the Project Coordinator and may need to closely collaborate with Project Analysts and Project Managers training that have been identified for your own career and professional development
Tasks And Responsibilities
Field monitoring and data collection
- Conduct mine site visits and use the systems and tools provided by SLR to collect and report incidents and other events in and around mine sites.
- Work with a network of local stakeholders to verify and confirm information about incidents and other events in and around mine sites.
- Assist mine operators and local stakeholders in the implementation of measures to mitigate risks at mine sites
- Monitor progress and ensure that the activities undertaken by the cooperative and the local partner (agents) meet the objectives set.
- Monitor and ensure the compliance with procedures for implementing the mineral traceability scheme aligned with the OECD guidelines.
- Assess and record any potential risk of health, safety, fraud, illegal mining and environmental damage on mining sites.
- Be responsible for monitoring the tagging and scanning process;
Reporting and communication
- Report regularly to Better Mining project coordinators and project analysts.
- Transmit to the local database manager and/or other local staff, the information collected through the local monitoring system, according to the modalities defined in the procedures manual and the different trainings
- Become familiarised with the Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) and associated procedures;
- Participate in CAP planning and implementation, in consultation and full collaboration with the wider senior Better Mining Team (or any designated staff) and other relevant stakeholders including mines operators;
- Monthly mine site report generation
- Promote maximum transparency of data
Engagement with stakeholders
- Develop and maintain good relations with stakeholders in the area of assignment, government representatives, members of mining cooperatives in the area, civil society and community members
- Contribute to proactive and positive communication (subject to compliance) to stimulate and support investment in the community
- Collaborate with mine operators and other local stakeholders on risk mitigation and initiatives to improve conditions at mine sites and in mining communities.
- Monitor initiatives and activities related to the minerals sector
- Facilitate and record regular meetings of corrective action plans with local stakeholders.
Research and knowledge of products
- Make suggestions for the optimisation (effectiveness, efficiency) of the local monitoring system
- Prepare and improve information and reporting documents regarding representation activities
- Contribute to the identification of training and capacity building needs of supply chain stakeholders
- If necessary, conduct awareness raising and/or training sessions with government officials, cooperative members and other supply chain stakeholders
Training
- Participate in Identifying skill set gaps within the wider Better Mining team
- Identify and complete training that have been identified for your own career and professional development
- Conduct mine site visits and use the systems and tools provided by SLR to collect and report incidents and other events in and around mine sites
