Job Overview

The University of Global Health Equity (UGHE) is seeking a qualified and experienced Faculty, Pediatric Surgery to join its Department of Surgery.

The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, pediatric surgical clinical services, research, and global surgery initiatives. The role will involve teaching and clinical supervision at Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital and affiliated training sites, mentoring students and residents, and supporting the development of pediatric surgical training aligned with COSECSA standards.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated pediatric surgeon with strong clinical, teaching, research, and mentorship experience who is committed to improving access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical care for children in resource-limited settings.

Key Responsibilities

Undergraduate

Medical Education

  • Develop pediatric surgery curriculum, syllabi, and teaching content.
  • Deliver lectures, small-group sessions, simulation-based training, and bedside teaching.
  • Supervise medical students during surgery clerkships.
  • Participate in OSCEs, written examinations, and workplace-based assessments.
  • Mentor undergraduate research projects.
  • Coordinate pediatric surgery teaching activities with visiting and adjunct faculty.
  • Ensure quality and consistency of clinical teaching across affiliated training sites.
  • Participate in direct patient care as part of clinical teaching.

Postgraduate and Residency Education

  • Support competency-based training aligned with COSECSA standards.
  • Supervise residents in neonatal and pediatric surgical care.
  • Conduct workplace-based assessments, logbook reviews, case discussions, and operative competency assessments.
  • Support preparation for COSECSA membership and fellowship examinations.
  • Mentor residents in clinical practice, research, leadership, and professionalism.
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality conferences, journal clubs, and academic rounds.
  • Support simulation-based training for pediatric surgical procedures.
  • Contribute to accreditation and quality assurance processes.

Clinical Service Delivery

The faculty member will support the expansion of comprehensive pediatric surgical services at Butaro Level II Teaching Hospital, including:

  • Pediatric general surgery and emergency care.
  • Pediatric oncologic surgery.
  • Perioperative care of children, including anesthesia, critical care, and nutrition.
  • Development of clinical protocols and patient safety standards.
  • Quality improvement initiatives.
  • Multidisciplinary pediatric surgical care.
  • Strengthening referral systems and district-level capacity.
  • On-call and emergency pediatric surgical services.

Research and Scholarship

  • Initiate and support research in pediatric and neonatal surgery.
  • Develop grant proposals, research publications, and technical reports.
  • Mentor students and residents in research.
  • Conduct implementation and operational research focused on improving access to pediatric surgical care in Rwanda and similar settings.

Global Surgery and Institutional Service

  • Participate in Center for Equity in Global Surgery (CEGS) activities.
  • Contribute to global surgery conferences, seminars, and collaborations.
  • Develop partnerships with national and international pediatric surgery programs.
  • Support grant writing and resource mobilization.
  • Serve on UGHE committees as assigned.
  • Contribute to departmental strategy and academic program development.
  • Participate in community outreach and child health advocacy.
  • Promote interprofessional education and collaboration.

Qualifications and Skills

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Medical degree (MD, MBBS, or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Pediatric Surgery, such as Fellowship, MMed, or equivalent recognized specialist qualification.
  • Board certification or equivalent specialist recognition in Pediatric Surgery.
  • Eligibility for medical licensure or registration in Rwanda.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in pediatric surgical care, including neonatal surgery.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Demonstrated research experience.
  • Strong commitment to academic medicine and mentorship.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSc in Public Health, Global Health, or Medical Education.
  • Experience in health systems strengthening and surgical capacity building in low-resource settings.
  • Experience working in academic medical centers.
  • Knowledge of research methods and implementation science.
  • Experience in competency-based medical education.
  • Grant-writing experience and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Familiarity with COSECSA or similar regional training frameworks.
