Every student preparing for national examinations in Rwanda deserves access to real past papers. The National Examinations and School Inspectorate (NESA) has published an enormous archive of official past papers going back to 2002 — spanning Primary 6, Ordinary Level (S3), Advanced Level (S6), Teacher Training College (TTC), and TVET programmes. This post organises every single one, with direct download links.

Whether you are a P6 pupil sitting the Primary Leaving Examination for the first time, an S3 candidate revising for O-Level, an S6 student targeting top marks in the Advanced Level, or a teacher building revision materials for your class — this resource is for you.

Past papers are the single most effective revision tool available to any examination candidate. They reveal the format, the language, the level of depth — and they build the confidence that no textbook alone can give.

01 · ABOUT THE ARCHIVEWhy These Papers Matter

NESA — the National Examinations and School Inspectorate of Rwanda — is the body responsible for administering all national examinations in Rwanda. Their publicly accessible resources portal hosts an archive of past papers organised by year and level. The papers are free, official, and comprehensive.

The archive covers examinations from 2002 through 2025 (note: 2020 papers are not available, likely due to the COVID-19 disruption to examinations that year). Each year is subdivided by examination level: P6, S3, S6 General Education, S6 Advanced/New Programmes, S6 Accounting, TTC, and TVET.

📌 How to use this guide: Each section below covers one examination level. Click the green "Open Papers" button on any row to go directly to that year's official NESA folder, where you can browse and download individual subject PDFs.

02 · PRIMARYP6 — Primary Leaving Examination

The Primary 6 examination is the gateway from primary to secondary school. It tests five core subject areas and is taken by all students completing primary education. Papers below link directly to each year's P6 folder on the NESA portal, where you will find individual PDFs for each subject.

P6 subjects typically examined include Mathematics, English, Kinyarwanda, Science & Elementary Technology (SET), and Social Studies (incorporating History and Geography elements). Religious Education papers (CRE/IRE) also appear in many years.

03 · ORDINARY LEVELS3 — Junior Secondary Examination

The S3 examination marks the end of the first cycle of secondary school — Ordinary Level. It is one of the most important transitions in a Rwandan student's academic journey. Papers cover a broad curriculum that includes sciences, humanities, languages, and technical subjects.

Core S3 subjects include Mathematics, English, French, Kinyarwanda, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, CRE/IRE, Computer Science (ICT), and Economics. Not every subject was examined in every year; the NESA folder for each year will show exactly which papers are available.

04 · ADVANCED LEVELS6 — Senior Secondary Examination

The S6 Advanced Level examination is the culmination of secondary education and a direct determinant of university placement. NESA organises A-Level papers under distinct academic tracks. From 2002 through approximately 2022, papers were grouped under General Education. In more recent years, the curriculum restructuring introduced separate tracks:

  • S6 GE (General Education) — Available 2002–2025. Includes combinations such as PCB, PCM, MCE, HEG, MEG, and more.
  • S6 ANP (Advanced Sciences & New Programmes) — Available from 2024. Reflects the new curriculum rollout.
  • S6 ACC (Accounting) — Available from 2025. Dedicated track for accounting and business programmes.

07 · TIPSHow to Make the Most of Past Papers

Having access to past papers is only the beginning. Here is how to use them effectively:

Simulate exam conditions. Set a timer, put your phone away, and attempt the paper without looking at your notes first. The discomfort of not knowing is valuable — it shows you exactly where to focus your revision.

Study the mark scheme logic. In many NESA papers, especially at S6 level, you can infer the marking logic from the structure of questions. Notice how many marks each part carries and calibrate your answer depth accordingly.

Track patterns across years. Certain topics appear almost every year — recurring questions are a signal of what examiners consider most important. Build a list of these high-frequency topics and ensure you can answer them confidently.

Start from recent years first. Papers from 2019–2025 most closely reflect the current curriculum and question style. Work backwards through earlier years for additional practice once you have mastered the recent format.
