About Ampersand Rwanda Ltd

Ampersand Rwanda Ltd is a pioneer in electric mobility in Africa, providing electric motorcycles and battery-swapping infrastructure designed for commercial motorcycle taxi and delivery drivers. The company began its operations in Kigali and expanded into Nairobi, Kenya, in 2022.

Ampersand is working to make electric motorcycles more accessible and cost-effective while contributing to reduced carbon emissions. Its operations combine electric vehicles, battery-swapping stations, and technical systems designed to support the growing demand for electric mobility in East Africa.

Job Overview

Ampersand Rwanda Ltd is seeking a qualified Electrical Engineer, Network Facilities, to oversee the electrical design, installation quality, commissioning readiness, and maintenance of its battery-swapping station network.

Rwanda job postings

The successful candidate will provide technical supervision for electrical systems, manage a team of four electrical technicians, and coordinate with utility providers and contractors. Although the position is based in Rwanda, the engineer will also review station designs prepared for operations in Kenya.

Important requirement: Applicants must hold a current RURA Class B electrical installation licence at the start of employment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Electrical Design and Optimisation

The Electrical Engineer will prepare, review, and improve electrical designs for battery-swapping stations and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and reviewing single-line diagrams, load schedules, and distribution-board layouts for new stations and upgrades in Rwanda.
  • Sizing cables, protective devices, and earthing systems in accordance with applicable IEC and national standards.
  • Considering continuous charger loads, harmonics, and ambient temperature when designing electrical installations.
  • Balancing charger loads across phases and determining the appropriate electrical supply capacity.
  • Reviewing station designs prepared by contractors and the Kenya team before approval.
  • Maintaining standard station-design templates and bills of materials.
  • Verifying the quality and suitability of electrical materials before procurement or installation.

2. Installation Quality Control and Commissioning

The engineer will ensure that electrical installations meet approved designs, technical standards, and safety requirements. Duties include:

  • Developing and applying electrical quality-control checklists.
  • Inspecting installations before energisation.
  • Carrying out or witnessing insulation-resistance, earth-resistance, continuity, polarity, and residual-current-device (RCD) tests.
  • Maintaining complete testing and inspection records for each site.
  • Preparing lists of installation defects and approving installations only after defects have been corrected and verified.
  • Investigating electrical faults, including phase failures, nuisance tripping, and charger-bank faults.
  • Documenting root causes and corrective actions to prevent recurring failures.

3. Utility and Contractor Coordination

The role requires coordination with Rwanda Energy Group (REG), contractors, and other relevant stakeholders. Responsibilities include:

Rwanda job postings

  • Preparing and tracking new electricity connection and supply-upgrade applications.
  • Following up on voltage fluctuations, power outages, phase loss, and other power-quality issues.
  • Coordinating transformer and medium-voltage installation work.
  • Ensuring that licensed electrical activities are performed within the scope of the applicable licence.
  • Maintaining records of utility applications, inspections, approvals, and outstanding actions.

4. Energy Cost and Tariff Optimisation

The successful candidate will analyse electricity consumption and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Tasks include:

  • Reviewing electricity bills and metering data.
  • Analysing cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh), peak and off-peak consumption, and applicable demand charges.
  • Recommending tariff, load-shifting, and supply-configuration improvements.
  • Monitoring energy losses between grid supply and energy delivered to batteries.
  • Investigating unusual energy-consumption results and recommending corrective measures.
  • Reporting energy costs, consumption trends, and efficiency opportunities.

5. Electrical Technician Team Leadership

The Electrical Engineer will supervise four electrical technicians and coordinate their daily work. Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing weekly work plans and allocating site visits and fault call-outs.
  • Monitoring task completion and supervising fieldwork.
  • Coaching technicians on installation, testing, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Enforcing safe working practices, including permit-to-work procedures, lock-out/tag-out, appropriate personal protective equipment, and safe isolation.
  • Assessing technician competence and identifying training needs.
  • Maintaining a team skills matrix and supporting performance reviews and recruitment when required.

6. Preventive Maintenance and Asset Management

The engineer will develop and manage a preventive-maintenance programme for the battery-swapping station network. This includes:

  • Establishing maintenance schedules for distribution boards, protection devices, earthing systems, chargers, cabling, and transformer platforms.
  • Defining inspection and testing activities according to equipment requirements, risks, and operating history.
  • Scheduling maintenance visits and following up on overdue work.
  • Maintaining maintenance logs and asset registers.
  • Reviewing fault history to improve maintenance intervals and spare-parts planning.
  • Preparing monthly reports on maintenance completion, electrical faults, and station downtime caused by electrical failures.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or Electrical and Electronic Engineering with a power focus.
  2. A current RURA Class B electrical installation licence. This is mandatory from the start of employment.
  3. Registration with the Institution of Engineers Rwanda (IER).
  4. Two to four years of post-qualification experience in electrical design, installation, commissioning, or maintenance, including experience with medium-voltage systems or distribution-transformer works.
  5. At least one year of experience supervising electrical technicians or site teams.
  6. Working knowledge of IEC 60364 for low-voltage installations, cable sizing, protection coordination, and earthing.
  7. Practical ability to use insulation-resistance testers, earth testers, and multifunction installation testers.
  8. Ability to read and prepare single-line diagrams.
  9. Experience implementing or contributing to a preventive-maintenance programme.
  10. Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent electrical-drawing software and Microsoft Excel.
  11. Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda.
  12. A valid driving licence and willingness to travel to sites throughout Rwanda.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

The following would be advantageous:

Rwanda job postings

  • A RURA Class C electrical installation licence or demonstrated progress towards obtaining one.
  • Experience with REG electricity connection and supply-upgrade procedures.
  • Experience using power-quality analysers, thermal-imaging equipment, or electricity-metering data.
  • Familiarity with electric-vehicle charging, battery chargers, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, or other power-electronic loads.

Applicants who already hold a RURA Class C licence should indicate this in their application. The source states that Ampersand will support relevant professional development and progression towards Class C, where applicable, subject to company policy and an agreed development plan.

Expected Performance
