Instructions to Candidates
📋 General Information
This examination is the English Proficiency Test for Teachers — Sample Exam 3: Advanced Language & Pedagogy, administered by the Rwanda Education Board (REB) as part of the national teacher professional standards assessment framework. This is the most advanced of the three sample papers and is designed to evaluate higher-order English language skills required of experienced and senior teachers, including those seeking promotion to leadership roles such as Head of Department or Deputy Head Teacher in charge of Studies. The paper assesses the ability to manipulate complex grammatical structures, critically analyse and compare academic texts, identify and correct language errors in authentic teaching materials, and demonstrate understanding of what constitutes quality extended academic writing. The total marks for this paper are 100, and the minimum pass mark is 70%. The total time allowed is 1 hour (60 minutes).
📝 Structure of the Paper
This paper is organised into four parts covering advanced language and pedagogical knowledge. Part A — Advanced Grammar & Style (20 marks) contains eight (8) questions: Questions 1–5 assess your ability to transform sentences as instructed — including passive voice, indirect speech, participial phrases, gerund phrases, and inversion (2 marks each) — while Questions 6–8 require you to select and justify the grammatically and stylistically correct version from two formal English options (3–4 marks each). Part B — Critical Reading & Analysis (25 marks) presents a dual-passage comparison between Traditional Teaching and Progressive Teaching approaches; four (4) questions assess your ability to compare, synthesise, identify rhetorical strategies, and critically evaluate the two texts (5–10 marks each). Part C — Language in Teaching Context (25 marks) includes an authentic classroom handout containing ten deliberate language errors; Questions 13–17 assess your error identification and correction skills (2 marks each), and Question 18 assesses your ability to recognise a high-quality model paragraph for classroom teaching (15 marks). Part D — Extended Writing Concepts (30 marks) contains two questions assessing your knowledge of academic position paper structure and scoring criteria (15 marks each).
⚠️ Rules and Regulations
The following rules apply strictly to all candidates sitting this examination. 1. Conduct and integrity: This examination must be completed individually and independently. The use of dictionaries, grammar references, online translation tools, artificial intelligence applications, or any form of external assistance is strictly prohibited. Candidates found engaging in any form of malpractice will be disqualified and reported to the relevant REB examination oversight authority. All results are subject to verification and audit. 2. Reading and answering: Read every question and all four answer options carefully before selecting your response. Pay particular attention to questions that contain extracts, passages, or handout excerpts — you are expected to refer to the provided text when answering those questions. Some questions require identification of the best answer from options that may appear similar; choose the most complete and accurate response. 3. Navigation and pacing: This examination is divided into two pages of ten questions each. Use the "Next" and "Previous" buttons to navigate between pages. Your answers are saved automatically as you select them. Recommended time allocation: Part A — 15 minutes, Part B — 15 minutes, Part C — 18 minutes, Part D — 12 minutes. 4. Final submission: Before clicking "Submit," review all answered and unanswered questions. Unanswered questions receive zero marks. Once you submit, your score and a full detailed review of correct and incorrect answers will be displayed immediately. Results are final and cannot be appealed on the basis of technical errors caused by candidate actions such as early page closure or device shutdown.
