Instructions to Candidates
📋 General Information
This examination is the English Proficiency Test for Teachers — Sample Exam 1: General English Proficiency, administered by the Rwanda Education Board (REB) as part of the teacher recruitment and certification process. The examination is designed to assess the English language competencies required of all serving and prospective teachers at both primary and secondary school levels in Rwanda. Candidates are expected to demonstrate mastery of standard English grammar, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression as outlined in the national teacher professional standards. The total marks for this paper are 100, and the minimum pass mark is 70%. The total time allowed is 1 hour (60 minutes). No additional time will be granted once the timer has started.
📝 Structure of the Paper
This paper is divided into four parts. Part A — Grammar and Usage (25 marks) contains fifteen (15) questions testing your knowledge of English grammar rules including subject-verb agreement, tense usage, conditionals, reported speech, and error identification. Questions 1–10 carry one (1) mark each, and Questions 11–15 carry three (3) marks each. Part B — Reading Comprehension (25 marks) contains five (5) multiple-choice questions based on a provided passage; each question carries five (5) marks. Part C — Vocabulary and Word Usage (20 marks) contains eight (8) questions including synonym selection (2 marks each) and word form transformation (3 marks each). Part D — Written Expression (30 marks) assesses your understanding of essay structure and academic writing through two (2) conceptual questions worth ten (10) marks each. Read each question carefully and select the best answer from the options provided.
⚠️ Rules and Regulations
Candidates must observe the following rules throughout the examination. 1. Honesty and integrity: This is an individual assessment. Any form of academic dishonesty, including copying, use of unauthorised materials, or communication with other candidates, will result in immediate disqualification and may lead to disciplinary action under the REB examination regulations. 2. Answering instructions: Read all questions carefully before selecting your answer. Each question has four (4) options labelled A, B, C, and D. Select only one answer per question. Once submitted, answers cannot be changed. 3. Time management: Candidates are strongly advised to manage their time wisely. Allocate approximately 25 minutes to Part A, 15 minutes to Part B, 10 minutes to Part C, and 10 minutes to Part D. Do not spend too long on any single question. If unsure, make your best attempt and move on. 4. Technical conduct: Ensure your device is fully charged and your internet connection is stable before beginning. Do not refresh or close the page during the examination, as this may result in loss of answers and the timer will not pause.
