The Swiss Government Excellence
Scholarships 2027–2028 offer international students, researchers and
talented artists an opportunity to pursue advanced research, PhD studies or
postgraduate studies at eligible institutions in Switzerland.
The programme is offered by the Swiss
Confederation through the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign
Students (FCS) and is open to applicants from 183 countries, with
scholarship types and application deadlines varying by country.
Government
Scholarship Categories
1. Research Scholarships
- For early-career researchers who want to conduct research at a
Swiss higher education institution or recognised research institute.
- A Master’s degree or equivalent is generally required.
- Applicants need a research proposal and a Swiss academic
supervisor.
2. PhD Scholarships
- For qualified researchers seeking doctoral studies in
Switzerland.
- Scholarships may be awarded for 12 months and can be renewed up
to a maximum of 36 months, subject to academic progress.
- A Swiss academic supervisor is required.
3. Art Scholarships
- For talented young artists pursuing their first Master’s degree
at an eligible Swiss art school or conservatory.

- Applicants generally need a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Availability depends on the applicant’s country of origin.
Scholarship Benefits
Selected scholars may receive:
- CHF 2,450 per month
- Health insurance for eligible scholarship holders from
non-EU/EFTA countries
- CHF 600 one-time rental deposit grant
- Half-Fare Travelcard for public transportation
- Return flight allowance for eligible scholarship holders
- Excursions and activities organised for federal scholarship
holders

For ETH Zurich, the applicable date is 30 June 2027.
