Scholarship at Arizona State University | 30 Fully Supported Opportunities
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars
Program, in partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), is
offering 30 graduate study opportunities for students admitted
for the 2027–2028 academic year to pursue selected master’s
degree programs focused on technology and innovation.
The scholarship provides a
traditional, in-person, two-year graduate study experience at
ASU’s Tempe campus in Arizona, United States. It covers major study and living
costs, including tuition, on-campus accommodation, healthcare, and other
support.

September 2026 at 23:59 GMT.
Scholarship Overview
The program is designed for African
students who want to pursue graduate studies in technology, computing,
engineering, energy, and related innovation fields.
Selected scholars will also participate
in leadership development, mentorship, community engagement,
professional development, and other enrichment activities intended to
help them apply their knowledge and leadership to positive social and economic
change.
Master’s Programs Available
The scholarship supports the following
full-time, on-campus programs:
- MS Global Technology and Development
- MS Information Technology
- MS Human Systems Engineering – Intelligent Systems
- MCS Computer Science
- MS Data Science, Analytics and Engineering – Computing and
Decision Analytics
- MS Robotics and Autonomous Systems
- MS Civil, Environmental & Sustainable Engineering
- MS Clean Energy Systems
- MS Modern Energy Production and Sustainable Use
These programs cover areas including
information technology, computer science, data science, robotics, sustainable
engineering, clean energy, and technology development.
Scholarship Benefits
The scholarship provides comprehensive
support, including:
- Full tuition.
- Required books and student fees.
- On-campus housing.
- Healthcare/medical support.
- Airfare to and from Phoenix, Arizona.
- Visa application processing costs.
- English language proficiency test voucher, if required.
- ASU graduate application fee waiver.
- Leadership and signature programming.
This means successful scholars receive financial and developmental support throughout the graduate program
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following
requirements:
1. Bachelor’s Degree
Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s
degree by August 2027 from a recognized institution.
The application specifically states that
higher education diplomas, certificates, and other non-degree credentials
are not equivalent to a bachelor’s degree for this
scholarship.
2. Academic Performance
Applicants must demonstrate a strong
academic record equivalent to at least:
3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
3. English Proficiency
Applicants must meet ASU’s English
language proficiency requirements for graduate admission.
4. Citizenship
Applicants must be citizens of an
African country.
5. Age
Applicants must be 18 to 33 years
old on or before the application deadline.
6. Leadership and Community Service
Applicants must demonstrate a record of:
- Leadership.
- Service.
- Commitment to creating positive change in their communities.
7. Previous Graduate Studies
Applicants must not have previously
enrolled in or completed a graduate or master’s degree program. They also
cannot be enrolled in or begin another graduate/master’s program while
applying.
8. Relocation to the United States
Successful applicants must be able to
relocate to and reside at ASU’s Tempe campus in Arizona, USA, for
the duration of the program.
Application Process
The scholarship application has an
important first step: applicants must complete the scholarship
application before applying to ASU unless instructed otherwise by the
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program team.
Applicants who advance in the selection
process will be invited for an interview and will receive guidance concerning
the ASU admission process.
Those subsequently invited to apply to ASU
will receive an application fee waiver and should not pay an
application fee. However, admission to an academic program does not
automatically guarantee the scholarship.
Required Documents
A complete application should include the
following documents in PDF format:
- Completed scholarship application with essays.
- Resume/CV.
- One letter of recommendation.
- Transcripts.
- English language proficiency evidence, where applicable.
The recommendation letter should be signed
and dated within the past three years. If transcripts are not in English,
an English translation should also be provided.
Incomplete applications will not be
considered.

Scholarship Essay Requirements
The application requires applicants to
respond to essay questions.
Essay 1
Applicants must explain how their chosen
field of study connects with their long-term career aspirations and
the impact they hope to create in their community.
Required length: 450–500 words.
Essay 2
Applicants must describe a specific
experience demonstrating resilience, leadership, and/or adaptability,
explaining how that experience contributed to their personal or professional
development and prepared them for graduate studies.
Required length: 250–300 words.
Essay 3
Applicants must describe extracurricular
activities, work, travel, family responsibilities, or lived experiences that
shaped who they are and reveal something that may not be reflected in their CV,
recommendation letter, or academic transcripts.
Required length: 250–300 words.

27 September 2026 at 23:59 GMT
Applications submitted after the deadline
will not be considered.
Applicants are responsible for ensuring
that all information submitted is complete and accurate. Once submitted, the
application is considered final.
