Job Brief
or Position Summary: The Mine Supervisor is responsible for overseeing
the day-to-day mining activities in the area or in the tunnel she/he is
responsible to ensure safety, efficiency, and productivity. This role involves
leading and managing mining crews, coordinating with various departments and
ensuring compliance with regulations and company policies.
Responsibilities:
Mine supervisor has the following responsibilities and
duties:
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure
all mining operations comply with occupational health and safety
regulations, company policies, and environmental standards.
- Conduct
regular occupational health and safety inspections and risk assessments to
identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Implement
and enforce occupational health and safety protocols, including emergency
response plans.
- Lead
safety meetings and training sessions to promote a culture of safety.
- Investigate
accidents and incidents, document findings and implementing corrective
actions.
Operational Oversight:
- Lead
and coordinate daily mining activities, including drilling, blasting,
loading, tramming and hauling.
- Monitor
production schedules and ensure operations are carried out efficiently and
within set targets.
- Oversee
equipment maintenance and ensure machinery is in good order.
- Troubleshoot
and resolve operational issues promptly to minimize downtime.
- Develop
and implement operational strategies to enhance productivity and
efficiency.
Daily Operational Management:
- Plan
and schedule daily mining tasks and allocate resources effectively to meet
production goals.
- Supervise
the daily setup and operation of mining equipment and machinery.
- Coordinate
with the geology and survey teams to ensure proper ore body identification
and extraction techniques are used.
- Coordinate
with the processing and laboratory teams to ensure proper minerals
beneficiation techniques are used.
- Oversee
the execution of drilling and blasting operations, ensuring adherence to
occupational health and safety and operational guidelines.
- Monitor
and adjust ventilation systems to ensure a safe and productive working
environment.
- Manage
the transportation and logistics of extracted materials to processing
facilities including production to the upgrade plant.
- Collect
data, review and analyze daily production reports, identifying trends and
areas for improvement.
- Ensure
that all personnel follow standard operating procedures and occupational
health and safety protocols.
- Ensure
that all working areas are adhering to best hygiene, cleanliness and
house-keeping practices.
- Conduct
regular checks on the stability and integrity of underground structures to
prevent collapses or other hazards.
- Manage
and oversee the daily maintenance and repair of mine infrastructure and
equipment.
- Coordinate
with the maintenance team to schedule and prioritize repairs or upgrades
to minimize operational disruptions.
- Supervise
the implementation of dust control measures and ensure compliance with
environmental regulations.
- Maintain
accurate and up-to-date records of daily operational activities, including
production quantities, equipment usage, and personnel performance.
Team Management:
- Lead,
mentor, and manage teams of miners and mine workers, including assigning
tasks and monitoring performance.
- Conduct
regular performance evaluations and provide feedback and support to team
members.
- Ensure
adequate staffing levels and manage shift schedules to meet operational
needs.
- Foster
a collaborative team environment and resolve conflicts or issues within the
team.
Communication and Coordination:
- Collaborate
with other departments, such as geology, survey, processing, engineering,
maintenance and SHEC, to ensure smooth operation and resolve any
cross-functional issues.
- Prepare
and submit detailed reports on mining operations, production metrics,
occupational health and safety and environmental incidents.
- Communicate
effectively with management and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Coordinate
with external contractors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of
materials and services.
Regulatory and Environmental Compliance:
- Ensure
compliance with all local, and national, regulations regarding mining
operations.
- Implement
environmental management practices to minimize the impact of mining
activities on the surrounding ecosystem.
- Maintain
up-to-date knowledge of industry regulations and best practices.
- Oversee
the proper disposal of waste materials and management of environmental
impact assessments.
Budget and Resource Management:
- Request
regarding the required materials and equipment,
- Monitor
and control operational costs to stay within budget.
- Manage
resource allocation, including manpower and materials, to optimize
efficiency.
- Identify
opportunities for cost-saving measures and operational improvements.
- Oversee
distribution of necessary supplies and equipment, ensuring
cost-effectiveness and availability.
Training and Development:
- Develop
and implement training programs for new and existing employees to ensure
they are skilled and knowledgeable about mining operations and safety
procedures.
- Stay
current with industry trends and advancements and incorporate relevant
practices into training programs.
Quality Control and Assurance:
- Monitor
and assess the quality of mining operations, including ore extraction and
processing.
- Monitor
and assess the quality of mineral concentrates produced from the area or
from the tunnel she/he is responsible for and ensure they meet the
company’s standards.
- Implement
quality control measures to ensure that mining activities meet operational
and regulatory standards.
- Address
any quality issues or deviations from expected performance.
Technology and Innovation:
- Stay
abreast of technological advancements and innovations in mining equipment
and techniques.
- Evaluate
and recommend new technologies that could enhance operational efficiency
and safety.
- Implement
and manage new technologies or systems in the underground mining
environment.
Job Requirements:
- Diploma
or bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Mining Technology,
Mineral Processing, or a related mining discipline.
Experience
- Minimum
of 2years of experience in underground Mining operations,
preferably in a supervisory or management position.
Skills:
- Strong
knowledge of underground mining techniques, equipment, and safety
practices.
- Excellent
leadership and team management skills.
- Effective
problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Strong
communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability
to use English as the language of business.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability
to work in underground mining conditions, including lifting, climbing, and
exposure to potentially hazardous environments.
Be able to work under these Conditions:
- Work
is conducted primarily underground in mining environments.
- Working
in shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Exposure
to noise, dust and other environmental conditions typical of underground
mining.
- Demonstrated
knowledge and practical understanding of the Mine Health and
Safety Act (MH&SA) and applicable mining regulations and
standards.
- Good
knowledge of mining production processes, equipment, maintenance
requirements, and operational planning.
- Demonstrated
ability to supervise and manage employees, contractors, supervisors,
artisans, and other site personnel.
- Appropriate
training and demonstrated competency to perform the responsibilities of a
Site Manager.
- Knowledge
of occupational health and safety systems, risk assessment, incident
investigation, workplace inspections, and emergency response.
- Knowledge
of environmental management requirements applicable to mining operations.
- Ability
to implement and enforce Codes of Practice, Standard Instructions,
procedures, rules, and company standards.
- Strong
leadership, communication, coordination, problem-solving, and
decision-making skills.
- Ability
to plan and prioritize work while maintaining production, safety, quality,
and environmental requirements.
- Ability
to monitor production performance, equipment utilization, maintenance
activities, and operational costs.
- Ability
to prepare and interpret operational, production, safety, and maintenance
reports.
- Ability
to work effectively under pressure and in a challenging mining
environment.
- Good
computer literacy and ability to use relevant mining, reporting, and
administrative systems.
- Physically
and mentally capable of performing the duties associated with working in a
mining environment.
