NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Nyungwe Management Company Ltd (NMC Ltd) was created by the
management agreement between the Government of Rwanda (through RDB) and African
Parks Network, to manage Nyungwe National Park for 20 years starting from
October 2020. NMC Ltd is seeking to recruit suitable candidates to fill the
post of Forest Restoration Team Leader in Nyungwe National
Park. The candidates must be Rwandan, technically skilled with good
problem-solving ability, be enthusiastic, motivated, reliable, and able to
execute tasks independently.
JOB TITLE: Forest Restoration Team Leader (20)
REPORTING TO: Forest Restoration Field Coordinator
LOCATION: Gisakura, Nyamasheke district, Western Province
CONTRACT TYPE: Fixed term (with possibility of renewal)
DURATION: 12 months
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Nyungwe Management Company/African Parks (NMC/AP) is
implementing a forest and landscape restoration initiative aimed at restoring
degraded areas in Nyungwe National Park (NNP), as part of larger project
“Building resilience of vulnerable communities to climate variability in
Rwanda's Congo Nile Divide (CND) region through Forest and Landscape
Restoration”, which is being implemented principally by the Rwanda Forestry
Authority (RFA), and its implementing partners. Nyungwe Management Company will
implement assisted natural forest rehabilitation of 4,500 ha of indigenous
forest in NNP.
SCOPE OF THE JOB
The Forest Restoration Team Leader is responsible for
leading and supervising field teams engaged in assisted natural forest
regeneration (ANFR), site maintenance, and monitoring. This role ensures that
ANFR activities are implemented efficiently, safely, and in accordance with
approved restoration plans and technical standards. The Team Leader acts as the
key link between field workers and the Forest Restoration Field Coordinator.
Duties and Key responsibilities (not exhaustive)
Field Activities Implementation, Leadership, Supervision,
and Coordination
- Lead
daily ANFR activities such as fern cutting, site maintenance, and
monitoring.
- Supervise
casual laborers during field operations.
- Ensure
ANFR activities follow technical guidelines, restoration plans, and
environmental best practices,
- Allocate
tasks to team members and ensure work targets are met on time,
- Provide
on-site leadership, guidance, and motivation to the restoration team
- Support
team members through coaching and on-the-job training.
- Promote
teamwork, discipline, environmental and social safety, and professional
conduct in the field.
Monitoring, Data Collection & Reporting
- Collect
accurate field data, including GPS coordinates, seedling count, and
growth, etc.
- Submit
regular field reports to the Forest Restoration Field Coordinator.
- Report
challenges, risks, and field observations promptly.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure
all field activities comply with health and safety standards.
- Enforce
the proper use of tools and equipment, identify potential safety risks and
take immediate corrective action.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Minimum Education and Qualification Required
- Certificate
(A2) or Diploma (A1) in Forestry, Environmental Management, Natural
Resource Management, Agriculture, or a related field
- Medical
Report
- Criminal
Record
- Minimum
of 6 months of hands-on experience in forest restoration or natural
resource management.
- Proven
experience supervising or leading field teams is an added advantage.
- Having
worked in ANFR in Nyungwe National Park is an added advantage
- Problem-solving
and decision-making ability
- Practical
knowledge of Assisted natural forest restoration techniques
Working Conditions
- Primarily
field-based in remote restoration sites
- Requires
physical work under varying weather conditions
- May
involve staying many days (±20 days) working in a remote area at a forest
restoration site
