REB Plans to Give Every Teacher a Computer in Rwanda
In a significant move toward strengthening the foundations of digital education in Rwanda, the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) has announced a strategic collaboration with the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA) to roll out a comprehensive repair and maintenance framework for school ICT infrastructure.
During a high-level meeting, Dr. Nelson Mbarushimana (Director General of REB) and Mr. Antoine Sebera (CEO of RISA) deliberated on concrete strategies to address technical challenges facing electronics and computing devices in basic education institutions. Scheduled to commence operations in July 2026, this initiative represents a critical pivot point from simply acquiring classroom tech to actively sustaining it.
Sustaining Digital Infrastructure for Long-term Learning
Over the last decade, Rwanda has heavily invested in distributing ICT infrastructure to classrooms across the nation. However, hardware longevity and unexpected technical downtime often present key bottlenecks in digital curriculums. By standardizing a swift, dedicated repair and maintenance protocol, REB and RISA aim to eliminate classroom interruptions, keeping students connected and interactive learning materials fully functional.
Empowering Educators: A Computer for Every Teacher
Beyond maintaining existing hardware, the leadership team tackled another cornerstone of modern educational equity: teacher empowerment. Discussions centered around optimized models for computer distribution to schools, emphasizing an operational mandate to ensure every single teacher is equipped with a personal computer to carry out their daily instructional duties, lesson planning, and assessment management.
Providing teachers with robust hardware tools ensures that digital literacy is integrated naturally into daily pedagogical practices. When teachers are confidently equipped, the entire classroom environment benefits.
Looking Ahead to July 2026
As the implementation date nears, technical teams from both REB and RISA are finalizing logistical operations. This joint effort underlines Rwanda’s steadfast commitment to its national Smart Education goals, transforming the learning experience and building a resilient, knowledge-based economy from the grassroots up.
