The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Summer
Research Programme 2026 is a highly competitive 10-week intensive research
training programme designed for outstanding undergraduate students from around
the world who demonstrate strong academic potential and a clear interest in
pursuing research postgraduate studies at HKU. The Programme offers
participants an immersive research experience within one of Asia’s leading
research universities, providing early exposure to the rigour, expectations,
and intellectual environment of advanced academic research.
Administered by HKU’s Graduate School, the
Programme reflects the University’s long-standing commitment to nurturing the
next generation of researchers and academic leaders. Since its establishment,
the Graduate School has been responsible for the academic governance, quality
assurance, and strategic development of HKU’s research postgraduate degrees,
including the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
programmes. The Summer Research Programme aligns closely with this mission by
identifying and supporting high-calibre students at an early stage of their
academic journey.
Each participant in the Programme is
formally affiliated with an HKU faculty, department, or interdisciplinary
research area and is placed under the one-to-one mentorship of a professoriate
staff member. Under this supervision, participants plan, develop, and carry out
an independent research project tailored to their academic interests. Students
are required to indicate their preferred faculty, department, field of study,
and proposed mentor(s) during the application process, and are strongly
encouraged to contact potential mentors prior to applying.
Beyond individual research work, the
Programme provides structured research skills training, professional
development workshops, networking opportunities, and enrichment activities.
These components are designed to strengthen participants’ analytical thinking,
research methodology, academic communication, and understanding of postgraduate
research pathways.
The Programme is conducted on campus in
Hong Kong, offering participants direct engagement with HKU’s research
infrastructure, academic community, and vibrant international learning
environment. International students who do not hold the right of abode or right
to land in Hong Kong are required to obtain a student visa upon admission.
Funded by the University of Hong Kong
Foundation for Educational Development and Research, the HKU Summer Research
Programme 2026 serves as a key talent-development initiative and a potential
stepping stone toward future MPhil or PhD studies at HKU for high-performing
participants.

Presidential PhD Scholarship for outstanding participants
- Scholarship value: up to HK$439,500 (US$56,350) in the first
year and HK$422,000 (US$54,110) in each subsequent year
Eligibilities
- Outstanding undergraduate students in year 3 and year 4 with
CGPA 3.6 or above (or equivalent)
- Outstanding students in Master’s degree programme with a
Bachelor’s degree in 1st
- Class Honours (or equivalent)
- Outstanding academic performance
- Strong interest in research postgraduate studies
- Previous research experience
- Interest in interdisciplinary studies
- High English proficiency
- Mature and independent
