Call for Applications – Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for Rwandan Teachers (2026)

Reference is made to the letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINAFFET) with Doc Number: MINAFET/DGOA, AME/305/2026 dated 21-1-2026 transmitting a Note Verbale R3/002/2026 from the Embassy of Japan in Kigali, inviting Rwandan teachers to apply for the 2026 Japanese Government through the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) scholarship under the "Teacher Training Students" category;

The Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) is pleased to inform eligible Rwandan teachers to apply to the above mentioned scholarship for further training in Japan.

Application Deadline: 6 February 2026 at 12:00 PM

How to Apply: Interested applicants are advised to carefully review the application requirements and submit complete application documents within the stated time frame. About

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship [Teacher Training Program] is a full scholarship for teachers with Rwandan nationality who wish to study in Japan, provided by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT), Japan.

NOTE: The objective of the study should be enhancement of the teachers’ performance in teaching or school administration. No degree will be acquired. If you are looking for opportunities to pursue Master’s or PhD, kindly refer to “Research” program (Application is closed for this program).

Application Guidelines and Application Forms can be downloaded on STUDY in JAPAN website.
 
NOTES:

- Please be sure to read the Application Guidelines thoroughly before applying.

Applications with any missing documents will be disqualified, and the Embassy will not provide a feedback about the missing documents.


- Forms must be completed in accordance with all the instructions met.
 

- Some documents must have a stamp from the notary or your school. Kindly, check detailed requirements in the Application Guidelines section No.7 “Application Documents”.
 

The application documents represent you in the first layer of the screening (especially in the document screening). Please be specific especially when you fill out application form No. 20 “Your research plan in Japan”. Uniqueness, specifically explained motivation, and details about the plan will be appreciated. The research topic must correspond to the university / course of your preference to be indicated in “Placement Preference Application Form”. Please refer to “Course Guide of Teacher Training Program” to see available courses.

The result of document screening, written examination and interview will be informed to the successful candidates only. The Embassy can't reply to inquiries regarding the result of the examination.

Application
Applicants submit all necessary documents to Embassy of Japan in Rwanda by 12:00 on February 6, 2026

<<First Screening>>
1Document examination will be in process, and the screening result will be disclosed to the successful candidates by February 13.

February 19, 2026

2Written Examination & Interview
Successful candidates will proceed to the written examination (English and Japanese) and interview that will take place at the Embassy.

Beginning of March, 2026

Result of the First Screening
The result will be informed to the candidates who attended the examination. Successful candidates’ application documents and screening results will be sent to MEXT.

June, 2026

<<Second Screening conducted by MEXT>>
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will select the candidates based on the document applications and first screening results.

July - August, 2026

Final Results
Final results will be disclosed via an email.

August, 2026

Pre-departure orientation
The Embassy will support the scholarship grantees to prepare for the departure.

September - October, 2026

Departure for Japan
