To the Next P6 Candidates: Your 5-Step Guide to Conquering the National Exam
Dear P6 Students,
The National Examination may seem huge, but you have spent years preparing for it! The key to success is not just studying harder, but studying smarter. Here are the five most important steps you can take, starting today, to ensure you walk into the exam room with confidence.
1. Master Your Time in the Exam Room ⏳
The biggest challenge in the P6 exam is often finishing all the questions on time. You need to train yourself to be fast and accurate.
Practice with a Clock: When you work on past papers (for subjects like Mathematics or Science & Elementary Technology), set a strict timer. Do not stop until the time is up. This teaches you how long to spend on each section.
Don't Get Stuck: If you read a question (especially in Math) and don't immediately know the answer, skip it and move on! Complete all the easy and medium questions first. Come back to the hard ones at the end. Getting stuck on one question for 15 minutes can cost you 15 marks elsewhere!
2. Decode the Language Subjects (English & Kinyarwanda) 🗣️
Language papers, including English Language and Kinyarwanda, test your ability to read carefully and communicate clearly.
Comprehension First: The reading comprehension section is often the easiest place to score marks, but you must read the passage at least twice.
First read: To understand the main idea.
Second read: To locate the specific answers for the questions.
Check Your Grammar: In the grammar and vocabulary sections, read your answer back into the sentence to see if it makes sense. If the question asks for the plural, make sure you don't write the singular!
Write Clearly: For composition or essay questions, plan a simple, clear structure (Introduction, Body, Conclusion). Your handwriting and presentation count, especially when the examiner is marking hundreds of papers.
3. Know Your World (Social & Religious Studies) 🌍
The Social & Religious Studies paper covers a huge range of topics—from Rwandan history and civics to geography and moral values.
Facts and Locations: You must memorize key facts, dates, names of national figures, and locations of provinces, districts, and geographical features (like lakes and mountains).
Pay Attention to Instructions: If the question asks for two advantages, list only two. If it asks you to explain, you must write more than a single word answer.
4. Work Smart on Math and Science 🧠
These subjects require continuous practice, not last-minute memorization.
Show Your Work (Mathematics): Even if you get the final answer wrong, you get marks for showing the correct steps, or the formula you used. Never write only the final answer. Practice writing your working steps clearly.
Understand Formulas: Don't just memorize the formula for Volume or Area; understand how it works. Use the official 2025_P6_Mathematics.pdf curriculum to check every topic.
Be Specific (Science): In Science and Elementary Technology, answers must be precise. If a question asks for a part of the human body or a component of a simple machine, use the correct technical term.
5. Stay Calm and Rest Well 🙏
Your performance on exam day is affected by how you feel.
Review, Don't Cram: In the final week, don't try to learn completely new topics. Simply review the notes you already have.
Sleep is Mandatory: The night before each exam, get a full, long sleep. Your brain works much better when it is rested. It’s better to sleep than to stay up late studying.
Be Positive: Remind yourself of all the years you have spent in school. You have the knowledge! Take a deep breath before the paper starts, and give it your absolute best effort.
