The Ministry of Public Service and Labour (MIFOTRA) has officially announced that Wednesday, May 27, 2026, will be observed as a public holiday across Rwanda.

The holiday is declared in celebration of Eid Al-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice), one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar.

Scope of the Holiday

According to the official communique issued by the Ministry, this public holiday applies to all workers nationwide. It covers:

  • The Public Sector: All government ministries, agencies, and public institutions.
  • The Private Sector: All private companies, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.

Employers and employees in both sectors are requested to take note of this announcement to plan their working schedules accordingly.

What is Eid Al-Adha?

Eid Al-Adha, also known as the "Feast of the Sacrifice," honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. Before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God provided a lamb to be sacrificed instead.

In commemoration of this intervention, animals (usually sheep, goats, or cows) are sacrificed. The meat is then divided into three parts:

  1. One share is given to the poor and needy.
  2. One share is given to relatives, friends, and neighbors.
  3. One share is retained by the family.

It is a time of deep reflection, prayer, charity, and community gathering.

Wishing a blessed and peaceful Eid Al-Adha to all our Muslim readers, their families, and communities across Rwanda! Eid Mubarak!
