A New Dawn for Environmental Education in Rwanda: REB and SPAC Launch Transformative Teacher Training

The Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, has announced a significant step forward in integrating environmental stewardship into the national curriculum. This landmark initiative, in partnership with the SPAC EduConservation project, is set to launch a series of intensive training workshops for teachers, marking the pilot phase of a transformative pan-African environmental education program in Rwanda.
This ambitious project is not merely an addition to the curriculum; it represents a fundamental shift in how the next generation of Rwandan citizens will engage with and protect their natural heritage. By empowering teachers with specialized tools and knowledge, the program aims to cultivate a deep, country-specific appreciation for nature conservation, directly aligning with Rwanda’s vision for sustainable development and a green economy.

The Imperative: Why Environmental Education Now?

In an era defined by global climate challenges and the urgent need for biodiversity conservation, the role of education has never been more critical. Rwanda, known globally for its progressive environmental policies, including the successful Umuganda community service and the ban on plastic bags, recognizes that long-term sustainability is rooted in the classroom.
The SPAC EduConservation project addresses this need head-on. It is a pan-African environmental education project designed to integrate positive, locally-relevant nature conservation messages into the existing school curricula of African nations. Unlike generic environmental programs, the SPAC EduConservation approach is meticulously tailored to the Rwandan context, ensuring that the content resonates deeply with students' daily lives and the specific ecological challenges and successes of the nation.
The core philosophy is one of curriculum enrichment, not curriculum overload. The project has developed a multi-resourced Teachers' Toolkit that is fully aligned with the Rwandan School curriculum. This toolkit is designed to be a practical, engaging resource that allows teachers to seamlessly weave environmental conservation themes into subjects like Science, Social Studies, and even Language Arts.

The Pilot Phase: Investing in Rwanda’s Educators

The initial phase of this groundbreaking partnership focuses on capacity building for the educators who will be the vanguards of this change. The training workshops are specifically targeting SET (Science, Education, and Technology) teachers and Directors of Studies (DoS) from 30 selected schools across a wide range of districts.
The selection of these 30 schools for the pilot phase is strategic, aiming to create centers of excellence that will eventually serve as models for nationwide rollout. The districts involved in this crucial initial phase include: Kamonyi, Muhanga, Ruhango, Nyanza, Huye, Gisagara, Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Nyamasheke, Rusizi, Karongi, Ngororero, Nyabihu, Rubavu, Musanze, Burera, Gakenke, Rwamagana, Kayonza, Ngoma, Gatsibo, Nyagatare, Nyarugenge, and Kicukiro. This broad geographical representation ensures that the pilot's findings will be robust and applicable to diverse educational environments across the country.
A total of 189 SET teachers and DoS have been invited to participate, underscoring the scale and commitment of REB and SPAC to this initiative. The training is not a theoretical exercise; it is a hands-on, practical session focused on the effective use and implementation of the newly developed Teachers' Toolkit.

The Training: Dates, Locations, and Logistics

To accommodate the large number of participants and ensure focused, high-quality instruction, the training has been organized across two distinct sites and dates in November 2025:
SiteDatesLocationTarget Audience
Site 115–16 November 2025La Palisse Nyamata, Bugesera DistrictSET Teachers and DoS from the Eastern and Southern Provinces
Site 222–23 November 2025Environment Center, Karongi DistrictSET Teachers and DoS from the Western and Northern Provinces, and Kigali City
The commitment of the partners to the success of this pilot is evident in the logistical support provided. SPAC EduConservation has pledged to cover all expenses related to this training, removing any financial barrier for the participating teachers and schools. This comprehensive support ensures that educators can fully focus on mastering the new toolkit and preparing to implement the program in their classrooms.

The Teachers' Toolkit: A Resource for the Future

The heart of the EduConservation project is the Teachers' Toolkit. While the specific content is tailored to the Rwandan curriculum, the toolkit generally focuses on key themes of nature conservation, including:
Biodiversity and Ecosystems: Understanding the value of Rwanda's unique flora and fauna, from the mountain gorillas to the Akagera National Park.
Water Conservation: Addressing the importance of water sources, wetlands, and sustainable water management practices.
Waste Management and Pollution: Promoting the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, and the impact of pollution on the environment and public health.
Climate Change: Providing age-appropriate lessons on the causes and local effects of climate change, and actions students can take.
Sustainable Living: Encouraging practices that support the environment in daily life, such as energy efficiency and responsible consumption.
The toolkit is designed to be multi-resourced, meaning it includes not just lesson plans, but also engaging activities, visual aids, and suggestions for field-based learning, making environmental education an exciting and interactive experience for primary school learners.

A Collaborative Vision for Conservation

The success of this pilot hinges on the strong collaboration between the government and non-governmental partners. The Ministry of Education and REB provide the institutional framework and curriculum expertise, ensuring the program's relevance and sustainability within the national education system. SPAC EduConservation, initiated by Sabine Plattner African Charities (SPAC) in partnership with Leadership for Conservation in Africa (LCA), brings the specialized expertise in developing Africa-centric conservation resources.
This partnership is a powerful model for how public and private entities can converge to address national priorities. The training is a direct investment in the professional development of Rwandan teachers, recognizing them as key agents of change in the country's environmental future.

Looking Ahead: From Pilot to National Impact

The pilot phase, running through the end of 2025, will be a period of intensive learning and evaluation. Feedback from the 189 participating teachers and Directors of Studies will be crucial in refining the Teachers' Toolkit and the training methodology. The ultimate goal is to scale the program, making the EduConservation toolkit and training available to all primary school teachers across Rwanda.
By embedding environmental education directly into the school curriculum, Rwanda is ensuring that the next generation is not only aware of environmental challenges but is also equipped with the knowledge, values, and skills to be active participants in conservation efforts. This initiative is a testament to Rwanda's commitment to a sustainable future, where education is the most powerful tool for protecting the planet.
