2,197 Scholarship Opportunities for Rwandan students: Rwanda Expands TVET Scholarship Programme to Empower More Youth
The Rwanda TVET Board (RTB), in collaboration with the German Government through KfW, has announced a major expansion of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Scholarship Programme. For the upcoming 2025/2026 academic year, an additional 2,197 students will benefit from the initiative, raising the total number of scholarship recipients to 4,000 across the country.
Building Skills for Rwanda’s Future
The TVET Scholarship Programme was officially launched in 2023 as part of Rwanda’s strategy to promote equitable access to quality education while meeting the country’s growing demand for skilled labor. The programme specifically targets high-performing students from low-income households, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent them from pursuing technical and vocational training.
Scholarship recipients receive full financial support, which covers tuition, learning materials, and other essential needs while enrolled at selected Technical Secondary Schools. This comprehensive support package allows students to focus entirely on their studies and skills development.
Partnership with Germany through KfW
This expansion has been made possible thanks to a strong partnership with the German Government, supported by the German Development Bank KfW. Germany has long been recognized globally for its strong vocational training systems, and its collaboration with Rwanda reflects a shared vision: equipping young people with the skills and competences needed to thrive in today’s dynamic job market.
Why TVET Matters for Rwanda
Rwanda’s development agenda emphasizes the importance of skills-based education to drive innovation, job creation, and sustainable growth. The expansion of the TVET Scholarship Programme aligns with national priorities such as:
-
Poverty reduction: Providing opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
-
Workforce development: Building a pool of qualified technicians, artisans, and innovators.
-
Equity in education: Ensuring every learner, regardless of background, has a chance to succeed.
-
Economic transformation: Supporting sectors like construction, energy, ICT, hospitality, and manufacturing with skilled professionals.
Voices from the Programme
Since its launch, the TVET Scholarship Programme has transformed the lives of thousands of young Rwandans. Beneficiaries have expressed that the scholarship not only lifted the financial burden off their families but also motivated them to aim higher academically and professionally. Teachers and school leaders have also noted improved performance among scholarship recipients, who feel empowered by the opportunity.
Looking Ahead
With the inclusion of 2,197 new students in 2025/2026, the programme is steadily progressing toward building a skilled and competitive workforce for Rwanda. By investing in the potential of its youth, Rwanda is laying a strong foundation for a future driven by innovation, productivity, and inclusivity.
